Live in rural Nevada? The Moon will have 4G LTE before you will

Image
Public Domain PicturesNokia and Vodafone have partnered with PTScientists to bring 4G LTE data to the Moon.PTScientists will send rovers to the lunar surface and use the 4G LTE network to transmit HD video back to Earth. Will this finally shut up the Moon-landing hoaxers? Probably not, but it will be cool anyway. If you live in rural Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Washington, or any of the other places where people struggle to get a 4G LTE signal from any of the four major wireless carriers, you might be happy to know Moon people will soon have faster internet than you. That’s right, 4G LTE data is coming to the Moon. Since the current population of our natural satellite is (reportedly) zero, one might wonder why the Moon needs fast data speeds while many of us Earthlings are stuck on 3G or worse. If you guessed “science,” then you get a moon-shaped sticker! New-space firm PTScientists wants to send quattro rovers (partially engineered with Audi) to explore the surface of our lunar neighbor an…

Chrono Trigger for Android gets update, is a little less awful

Image
Droid GamersChrono Trigger, one of the greatest games of all time, got a very flawed port to Android back in 2012.Slightly updated in 2014, the game just recently got a complete set of updates that fixed a lot of issues. Many flaws remain, and reviewers are longing for a true, 1-to-1 port of the original. Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest video games of all time, for any console, of any genre, in any decade. This isn’t just us saying that. It’s practically set in stone by the gaming community. You can imagine if the game got messed with in any capacity, there would be a lot of angry nerds. It would be like the Special Editions of the original Star Wars trilogy all over again. That’s exactly what publisher Square Enix did in 2012, when it released a port of Chrono Trigger to Android phones via the Google Play Store. It was, shall we say, not too well received.Editor's Pick 5 best Nintendo DS emulators for AndroidThe Nintendo DS is among the most popular handheld consoles of all time.…

Sony, we deserve more than a copied HTC design

Image
This is what we’ve been waiting for? A Sony-made HTC U11? The Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are two of the nicest phones at MWC this year.Just like every other high-end device made by the company, both phones come with top-of-the-line specs, beautiful displays, and some impressive new camera features. The biggest news with the XZ2 line isn’t what’s under the hood — rather, it’s the hood itself.Ever since the Xperia Z, pretty much every Sony phone has looked the same. The gigantic bezels above and below the display and angular design were defining features of the Xperia lineup, and that wasn’t always a negative thing. Back in 2013, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t find the Xperia Z line attractive. Back in 2013, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who didn't find the Xperia Z line attractive. Smartphone design drastically changed in 2017, when OEMs started adopting taller 18:9 displays and shrinking bezels. We were introduced to smartphones like the Galaxy S8 an…

Google will teach you about AI and machine learning for free

Image
GoogleGoogle created a new site that it hopes will be a hub of information for artificial intelligence and machine learning. On the site is a crash course on the two subjects, that Google initially developed for its employees. In the future, the company hopes the site will expand with more courses and information, all free for everyone. These days, you can’t open a tech blog without seeing headlines about artificial intelligence and machine learning (there is a difference). Google knows that many folks don’t have a clue how these technologies work, even people in technology industries where AI and machine learning are going to be incredibly useful, such as app development. To combat this, Google launched a new site called Learn with Google AI. This information hub will be a place where people can “learn about core ML concepts, develop and hone your ML skills, and apply ML to real-world problems.” The site is technical in nature, but it is intended to be a resource for everyone, from advan…

Huawei Watch 3 is confirmed, but we’ll have to wait a while

Image
Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei, confirmed that the Huawei Watch 3 is currently in development.Since the Huawei Watch 2 is still selling well, Mr. Yu admitted that there are no plans to release the follow-up anytime soon. With the Huawei P20 launch next month, it will be a long while before we hear any solid news on the new smartwatch. Any hopes of Huawei announcing the Huawei Watch 2 follow-up before the end of Mobile World Congress 2018 are now dashed. Richard Yu, CEO of the company, informed TechRadar that while the Huawei Watch 3 is in development, it won’t see a release anytime soon. The reason? The Huawei Watch 2 is selling well enough that a new model isn’t necessary.“It will come later – there’s no hurry because Huawei Watch 2 sells well. We’re not in a hurry, so we’re launching the new watch later,” Mr. Yu said.Editor's Pick Best smartwatches (February 2018)Smartwatches are still a very new thing to a lot of people, and for good reason. A smartphone drove our car, and we lived to tell the tale

Image
It’s an unusually cold morning in Barcelona and, together with two of my colleagues, I’m shivering in an empty parking lot outside the city’s legendary Camp Nou.We’re waiting for our ride, a Porsche Panamera. Not bad from a bunch of humble Android bloggers, right? Alas, we’re not here for a joyride. We’ve actually come to see Huawei’s RoadReader project, probably the coolest application of AI at this year’s MWC. (Admittedly, the bar for cool AI applications was pretty low.)With RoadReader, Huawei wanted to showcase the AI prowess of its Mate 10 Pro smartphone and the Kirin 970 processor inside it. Put simply, the company turned a phone into the brains of a robotic Panamera. Editor's Pick What is the Kirin 970’s NPU? – Gary explainsNeural Networks(NN) and Machine Learning (ML) were two of the year's biggest buzzwords in mobile processoring. Nokia brings back its Pro Camera mode from the dead for its Android phones

Image
HMD Global announced the return of the Nokia Pro Camera mode for current Nokia phones with Zeiss optics. These include the Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 8 Sirocco, and Nokia 8.HMD Global did not say when the current Camera app would be updated with the revived mode. As forgettable as Nokia‘s Windows Phone days were, they introduced several smartphones whose cameras were more capable than anything else on the market. That was partially thanks to the Nokia Pro Camera mode, which introduced pro-level manual controls and was  thought dead after Nokia’s unceremonious exit from the Windows Phone market. That will soon change, however, as HMD Global announced the return of the Nokia Pro Camera mode for its top-tier Android smartphones.HMD Global chief product officer Juho Sarvikas announced the revival during MWC 2018 and said every Nokia phone with Zeiss optics would get the feature. These devices include the Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco, though Sarvikas confirmed on Twitter that the Nokia 8 would a…

Leaked image of the Huawei P20 Lite shows off iPhone X-notch and vertically-aligned cameras

Image
VentureBeatAnother leaked image of Huawei’s rumored P20 Lite recently surfaced. The P20 Lite reportedly features an iPhone X-style notch, dual cameras, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.Huawei is expected to announce the P20 Lite alongside the P20 and P20 Plus during its March 23 event in Paris. Even though March 23 is almost guaranteed to bring the Huawei P20 and P20 Plus, growing evidence in recent weeks suggest a third smartphone: the P20 Lite. Set up as the successor to last year’s P10 Lite, the P20 Lite recently popped up again, courtesy of VentureBeat‘s Evan Blass. The P20 Lite render we saw a few weeks ago showed off the iPhone X-style notch, but the leaked image further cements the feature. The Asus Zenfone 5’s notch is just as small and includes no special hardware, so we can assume the same about the P20 Lite’s.Elsewhere, the P20 Lite reportedly features a 5.6-inch, 2250 x 1080 display. If true, it would corroborate the dimensions listed in the FCC documents that suggest th…
