13 things you need to know in tech today
Here’s your daily tech digest, by way of the DGiT Daily newsletter, for Friday, July 5, 2019!
1. Microsoft better not be playing around…
This week’s most clicked link was Microsoft’s weird Windows 1.0 tease on social media (Engadget).
Well, the weird is getting weirder – and the emphasis is on 1985:
- Since then, Microsoft has spun out some more curious teases and videos on Twitter.
- On July 2 we saw a curious plug for programs Excel, Chart, and Flight Simulator.
- July 3 was a poll about how much memory was needed to run Windows 1.0 – just 64kbs.
- That was followed by a super-aesthetic Windows video. Someone asked what was going on, and the @Windows account had a simple answer: “Windows 1.0. That is what’s happening.”
- July 4 was a curious one too – with a big clue that it’s somehow related to “Stranger Things 3,” projecting an image from the latest series 3, episode 7, on top of MS-DOS.
- But but …they also said Windows 1.0 is “all new,” and rejected anyone calling it a throwback.
So what’s up?
- Just some marketing fun, or a sync-up with Netflix and Stranger Things? Would Microsoft really do that just for advertising?
- Most people suspect it’s something more.
- The hottest tip is that Microsoft is going to go through and open-source Windows 1.0, the product first released in 1985, upping it onto Github which Microsoft also owns, by the way.
- It’s… just a weird way of doing that, maybe?
- Speculate all you want — I’m not sure how long Microsoft will keep stretching it out, or if we’ll find out more today.
