A lot of Xiaomi’s success in India is because of its incredibly popular Redmi Note series. With different generations seemingly blending into each other, it was time for a change though. Luckily, Xiaomi seems to have recognized this. The newest member of the series — the Redmi Note 7 Pro — features key changes that put the phone back on top.

You get a glass sandwich design and a gradient color scheme that is a first for the Redmi series. Adding to the firsts is the inclusion of a USB-C port. Keeping with the more premium features, the Redmi Note 7 Pro was one of the first phones under 20,000 rupees to come with a 48MP primary rear camera. Excellent hardware at affordable prices is Xiaomi’s mantra, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that this continues to be the case with the Redmi Note 7 Pro.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro specs:

  • Display: 6.3-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 675
  • RAM: 4/6GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Rear camera: 48MP and 5MP

Samsung is taking the budget-friendly segment in India seriously once again. A great indicator of this is the fact that it has two devices on this list of best phones under 20,000 rupees. Between the Galaxy M and the Galaxy A series, Samsung has covered the entire price spectrum of affordable devices from the entry-level to the premium mid-range. Leading the charge is the fantastic Samsung Galaxy A50.

There are quite a few reasons why the Galaxy A50 a great choice. You get an excellent display, smooth performance, solid battery life, and impressive cameras with this well-rounded package. Most importantly, it’s also priced aggressively to take on the latest and greatest from the likes of Xiaomi and other competitors.

  • SoC: Exynos 9610
  • RAM: 4/6GB

Realme entered the Indian market with one of the best phones under 20,000 rupees in 2018. It’s only been a little more than a year, and it continues to give Xiaomi a run for its money. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly smartphone, the Realme 3 Pro is one of the best you can get.

The Realme 3 Pro does well to keep up with the competition, and even surpasses it in some ways. On the back is a beautiful gradient-finish with curved lines that really add to the overall aesthetic and makes up for the generic notch-face. More importantly, the device excels in the performance and battery departments and is affordable. There isn’t much more you can ask for than that.

Realme 3 Pro specs:

  • Display: 6.3-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 710
  • RAM: 4/6GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Rear camera: 16MP and 5MP

4. Samsung Galaxy M40

This is the second Samsung device on this list of the best phones under 20,000 rupees. It is the first to bring Samsung’s premium design language to this price range though. The Galaxy M40 comes with a punch hole notch that’s off to the side and isn’t very intrusive.

Everything else is standard fare for a premium mid-range smartphone. There’s a solid processing package, a lot of RAM and storage, good triple rear cameras, and impressive battery life. There are enough differences between the Galaxy M40 and the Galaxy A50 as well, and both have their own negatives and positives. If budget is a factor, the Galaxy M40 is the cheaper of the two (for the same RAM and storage).

Samsung Galaxy M40 specs:

  • Display: 6.3-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 675
  • RAM: 6GB
  • Storage: 128GB
  • Rear camera: 32MP, 8MP, and 5MP

5. Vivo Z1 Pro

You’d be hard-pressed to distinguish between the phones that fell in this price range last year, with identical notches galore. 2019 is thankfully shaping up to be different. That continues with the Vivo Z1 Pro. The front of the phone isn’t completely blemish-free of course. But you get a punch hole notch that’s not as intrusive.

It’s not just about the looks either. The Z1 Pro is also packed with features that you’d expect from a more expensive phone – triple rear cameras, upper mid-range processor, Widevine L1 support, an excellent selfie shooter, a huge battery, and more. The best part is that the Z1 Pro is priced quite aggressively. Vivo is looking to take on Xiaomi, Realme, and Samsung, and the Z1 Pro is a great way to do it.

Vivo Z1 Pro specs:

  • Display: 6.53-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 712
  • RAM: 4/6GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Rear camera: 16MP, 8MP, and 2MP
  • Front camera: 32MP
  • Battery: 5,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

6. Oppo F11

The Oppo F11 Pro grabbed all the headlines with its all-screen front and pop-up selfie camera. However, Oppo also launched the “base” F11 alongside it that is definitely worth considering. In fact, the Oppo F11 probably offers more value for money. That’s because there’s practically no difference between the F11 and the Pro edition, under the hood.

You get the same processing package, an identical rear camera setup, and an ever so slightly larger (20mAh) battery. The F11 Pro comes with more RAM though — 6GB compared to the 4GB of the F11. Both even come with the same front-facing camera. While it’s housed in a pop-up in the case of the F11 Pro, you get a standard waterdrop notch with its less expensive sibling. If you’re okay with a regular design and less RAM, you can save more than 4,000 rupees (~$60) with the Oppo F11.

Oppo F11 specs:

  • Display: 6.53-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: MediaTek Helio P70
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Storage: 128GB
  • Rear camera: 48MP and 5MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

7. Nokia 8.1

Nokia 8.1

The Nokia 8.1 started at around the 25,000 rupees (~$365) mark when it first launched. A recent price drop brings it down to a segment where it should have been from the start — at under 20,000 rupees. Which is excellent news, because there’s very little the Nokia 8.1 gets wrong. Except for the huge notch up front, but that’s personal preference.

It’s a beautifully built phone that feels really high-end. The Nokia 8.1 maintains the company’s tradition of offering a pure Android software experience, allowing for smooth performance. Nokia’s continued focus on the camera department is evident as well. Both the front and rear camera setups are capable of taking some excellent shots.

Nokia 8.1 specs:

  • Display: 6.18-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 710
  • RAM: 4/6GB
  • Storage: 64/128GB
  • Rear camera: 12MP and 13MP
  • Front camera: 20MP
  • Battery: 3,500mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

8. Motorola One Vision

The Motorola One Vision comes with a lot of features that are a first for the company. Not all of them — like the punch hole up front and a 48MP primary shooter — are a first for this price segment though. What is brand new when compared to any other phone in India is the long 21:9 aspect ratio display that gives the phone its name.

It’s all about “vision” here, be it for scrolling through apps or for content consumption. Native 21:9 content also looks great for supported movies on Netflix. Unfortunately, a lot of videos we watch don’t fit that aspect ratio, and whether it’s smart future proofing on the part of Motorola is yet to be seen. The display aside, the Motorola One Vision delivers in every other department as well. From performance to the camera, this phone is not going to disappoint.

Motorola One Vision specs:

  • Display: 6.3-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Exynos 9609
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Storage: 128GB
  • Rear camera: 48MP and 5MP
  • Front camera: 25MP
  • Battery: 3,500mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie
