These Amazon Prime Day 2019 tips can help you save big

Amazon Prime Day 2019 is almost here, running from July 15-16. While you could certainly just stumble in and try to pick up some good deals, planning ahead will ensure you make the most of Amazon’s made-up holiday.

Below we share some of our favorite Amazon Prime Day tips.

Sign up now if you don’t have Amazon Prime already

To participate in Amazon Prime Day you need a subscription to Amazon Prime, but you don’t necessarily have to pay for it. Amazon offers a 30-day free trial to Amazon Prime you can use for Prime Day. remember, you will only qualify if you haven’t had Prime in the last twelve months (or ever).

Once the sale is over you can cancel Prime and you won’t be charged a thing, though there’s actually a lot of great benefits to Prime so you might want to think about keeping the subscription.

Don’t forget about student or Medicaid discounts

If you are a qualifying college student or a Medicaid (or EBT) recipient, you don’t have to pay full price. If you qualify, you will pay just $6.99 a month or $60 a year. Students can even sign up for a free 6-month trial.

Make sure you’re actually getting a good deal by using 3rd-party tools

Not all Prime Day deals are created equal. To ensure you are getting the best deal possible we recommend using a third-party pricing tool like Camelcamelcamel or Keepa to see pricing history. PriceBlink is also great to see if another store has the same item for cheaper.

Not all products on Amazon are good either. We recommend FakeSpot to see if an Amazon product has a large percentage of fake reviews.

Don’t forget to get on the waitlist and sign up for alerts

The best deals tend to go fast. To help secure a spot in line you’ll want to join the waitlist and regularly check back to see if the item becomes available. You can even sign up for an alert, so you don’t have to necessarily do things manually.

Remember that once an item is in your cart you have 15 minutes to check out or the item will be removed from your cart and you might just miss your chance at a great deal.

You are given just 15 minutes to check out on a deal or it will be removed from your cart.

Get the Amazon app now

While you can certainly just go to the Amazon Prime Day deals page, using the Amazon app is the best way to track deals. The app even gives you notifications on new and upcoming deals.

Pay attention to Lightning deals so you don’t miss out

Amazon Prime day consists of a mixture of all-day deals (at least until supplies run dry) and limited time deals, known as Lighting Deals.

Lightning Deals run out fast, so you’ll want to keep an eye out. If you find a deal you want has become 100 percent claimed, you might just still have a slight chance if you add yourself to the deal’s waitlist. As mentioned earlier, customers have a limited time to buy and if someone doesn’t get the deal done in time you could end up sniping their spot.

Keep an eye out for rival deals

Because Amazon is so huge in the online shopping industry, it has a fair share of rivals. Walmart, Target, and eBay have all announced rival sales to compete with Prime Day. Likely Best Buy and others will also join in with equivalent promotions.

Unlike Prime Day, these deals won’t require subscriptions. Bottom line, it’s very possible some of the things for offer during Prime Day will be bested by a rival so you’ll want to keep a look out.

Tag team the sale with a family member

Amazon Prime lets you share your Prime account with another adult in your household, or even your kids. While the latter needs permission to make purchases, the other adult is free to do what they wish. That means you can tag team deals and split the list of what you want to go after.

A few other tips and considerations

Amazon Prime Day tips

While these are the biggest and most obvious tips, there are a few other Amazon Prime tips worth thinking about:

  • Plan ahead. If you know what you want from Amazon before the sale or deals are announced, you’ll be better able to prepare. Obviously impulse buys are a big part of Prime Day, but if you need that new TV or Amazon Kindle, it pays to bookmark or set up alerts ahead. You should also make a list of big ticket items you’re hoping to snag, especially if you tag team the sale with someone.
  • Set up reminders or mark the calendar. It’s easy to forget about things, so set up a Google Calendar alert, circle your old school calendar, or whatever else you need to do to remember the big sale day!
  • Amazon’s credit card will give you a credit line for the big sale and will also earn you 5 percent cash back on Amazon purchases, as long as you have a Prime membership of course.
  • If you want even more savings you can pass on two-day shipping. Usually the deals you get a minor things like a $1 reward for spending on digital purchases like e-books and apps, but this can still add up.
  • Get your grocery list ready for Prime Day. Last year, Prime members who spent $10 at Whole Foods were given a $10 Amazon credit to use for the sale. Amazon hasn’t announced this year’s Whole Foods integration, but we’d expect similar or even better deals this time around.
