Nokia 6.2 arrives in India at a dangerous price point

The Nokia 6.2 mid-range smartphone has arrived in India following in the footsteps of its sibling Nokia 7.2. The device continues Nokia’s legacy of sturdy build quality and good design. It even has two good-looking Charcoal or Ice colorways.

There are a lot of similarities between the Nokia 6.2 and the Nokia 7.2. They look identical and both have that comfortable, compact form factor.

However, the Nokia 6.2 is cheaper and features the Snapdragon 636 chipset instead of the Snapdragon 660 on the 7.2.

The camera on the Nokia 6.2 also takes a cut compared to its big brother. It gets a Zeiss triple-cam 16MP + 5MP (depth) + 8MP (wide) setup. The front camera sports an 8MP sensor.

Other common features with the Nokia 7.2 include a USB-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a Google Assistant button, a 3,500mAh battery, FM, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.0.

Nokia 6.2 pricing: Hit or miss?

Nokia has never really found the right price point for its products in India. Consumers in the country are extremely price cautious to the last penny. This is why Chinese smartphone makers like Xiaomi and Realme constantly compete for lower price points.

In this case, the Nokia 6.2 with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage is priced at Rs 15,999 (~$225) in India.

At a cheaper price, consumers have an option to purchase the Redmi Note 7 Pro which comes with a more powerful Snapdragon 675 processor. There’s also the Xiaomi Mi A3 with its 48MP triple cameras and 32MP selfie shooter.

Even the Realme 5 Pro with a 48M quad camera setup is less expensive. In fact, Samsung’s Galaxy M30S with its large 6,000mAh battery and 48MP triple-cam setup is also a lucrative buy at a lower price.

What the competition doesn’t have though (except the Mi A3) is Nokia’s software upgrade promise. The Nokia 6.2 is on Google’s Android One program, which means guaranteed timely updates for two years. Its stock Android 9 Pie experience also means a smooth software experience sans any bloatware. Then there are the Zeiss optics which could give competition to the likes of the M30S.

We found the Nokia 6.2 to be a well designed and worthy mid-ranger in our hands-on of the device.

The company says that it received a “very encouraging response” for the Nokia 7.2 in India. But given the competition and the price sensitivity in India, HMD Global is treading on dangerous territory. To sweeten the deal, the company is giving Nokia 6.2 buyers a 3-month membership trial to Google One with 100GB storage.
