Update October 16, 2019 (5:30AM ET): First announced in China, Xiaomi has now launched the Redmi Note 8 series in India. The Redmi Note 8 Pro and Redmi Note 8 both come with quad-cam setups. We’ve already reviewed the Redmi Note 8 Pro with a 64MP quad camera setup and you can check it out here.

The Redmi Note 8 leads with a 48MP camera and adds an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, a 2MP macro lens and a 2MP depth sensor. Unlike the Redmi Note 8 Pro’s Helio G90T chipset, the less expensive Note 8 gets a Snapdragon 665 processor. It also now ups the RAM on the basic version to 4GB instead of 3GB found on the basic variant of the Redmi Note 7.

In India, the Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with a dual SIM slot and a dedicated microSD slot. This is an India-first addition, Xiaomi says. You also get Amazon’s Alexa assistant baked into the Note 8 Pro in India — another first for the country. With Alexa integration, Xiaomi says you can control your Mi TV and other IR-capable gadgets in your home through voice commands.

The rest of the specifications for the Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro remain the same as their Chinese versions. No, the two phones don’t get MIUI 11 at launch. The new Android skin will be rolled out at a later date.

Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro India price

The Redmi Note 8 is priced at Rs 9,999 (~$139) for the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage version. Its 6GB RAM and 128GB storage model costs Rs 12,999 (~$181). The phone will be available in Space Black, Neptune Blue, Cosmic Purple and Moonlight White colorways.

Meanwhile, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is priced at Rs 14,999 (~$209) for the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage variant. Its 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 128GB models are priced at Rs 15,999 (~$223) and Rs 17,999 (~$251) respectively. The device gets Gamma Green and Halo White colorways.

The Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro will be available starting October 21 at 12 noon IST on Mi.com, Amazon India and through Mi Home stores.

Original Article October 9, 2019 (3:36AM ET): India already has two 64MP smartphones in the Realme XT and Samsung Galaxy A70s. But Xiaomi is also joining the fray with its Redmi Note 8 Pro.

The Chinese brand confirmed an October 16 launch date for the 64MP smartphone in India. Xiaomi initially stated at the end of August that the phone might only be available in India in eight weeks (i.e. end of October).

Xiaomi’s mid-range phone delivers a load of features, starting with the Helio G90T processor, 6GB to 8GB of RAM, and 64GB to 128GB of storage. The Redmi Note 8 Pro also features a 4,500mAh battery.

The star of the show is the quad rear camera setup though, featuring a 64MP primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide snapper, 2MP macro camera, and 2MP depth sensor. A 20MP camera in a waterdrop notch handles selfies.

Xiaomi hasn’t revealed pricing just yet, but we’re expecting it to occupy a similar price segment as the Realme XT. For what it’s worth, the Note 8 Pro has a starting price of €250 ($274) in Europe and 1,399 yuan (~$196) in China.
