MediaTek sits alongside Qualcomm as one of the most important third-party chipmakers in the Android smartphone ecosystem. The Taiwanese company’s processors are in loads of phones around the world. Let’s take a look at some of the best MediaTek phones on the market right now.

1. Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro

Quite possibly one of the most powerful mid-range phones around right now, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is the first high-profile device with the Helio G90T chipset. This is MediaTek’s gaming-focused chipset, featuring an octa-core CPU design (two Cortex-A76 and six Cortex-A55 cores), and a cut-down version of the Mali-G76 chipset seen in the Galaxy S10 series and Huawei P30 Pro.

The device is pretty beefy then, but it’s also got plenty of endurance on paper thanks to a 4,500mAh battery. That’s a notable 500mAh extra compared to the previous Redmi Note devices.

Xiaomi’s mid-range device also packs a quad rear camera setup, featuring a 64MP main camera, 8MP ultra-wide snapper, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro camera. This means you’re looking at one of the more impressive camera setups on a mid-range phone, as well as one of the best MediaTek phones on the list.

2. Motorola One Macro

Motorola has served up a variety of solid budget smartphones in 2019, and the Motorola One Macro is its latest affordable device running Android One software. It makes the list thanks to the budget-minded but capable Helio P70 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of expandable storage.

The Macro name is due to the 2MP macro camera on the phone, allowing you to take pictures of things from just two centimeters away. The macro sensor is also joined by a 13MP primary camera and a 2MP depth sensor, while an 8MP selfie camera sits in a waterdrop notch.

The phone also serves up a 4,000mAh battery, splash-resistant coating, and USB-C. And you’re getting all this for the equivalent of roughly $140 in India.

3. Nokia 2.2

You can also find Nokia-branded phones with MediaTek processors out there, and the Nokia 2.2 certainly fits the bill.

For $140, you can expect a low-end experience from this device, featuring the entry-level Helio A22 processor (quad-core Cortex-A53), a 5.7-inch HD+ screen, 3GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of expandable storage, and a 3,000mAh battery. The camera experience isn’t much to write home about either, packing a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front-facing snapper.

Thankfully, the Nokia 2.2 is an Android One device, which means it should get two major Android updates and three years of security updates. That’s definitely more than most low-end smartphones out there. It’s also one of the few MediaTek-toting phones running stock Android, making it worthy of our list.

4. Oppo Reno 2Z

It’s taken almost a year, but MediaTek’s upper mid-range Helio P90 chipset has finally landed in a smartphone. Yes, the Oppo Reno 2Z is the first phone with the processor, and it’s a pretty slick device on paper.

The Reno 2Z packs 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, a 6.53-inch FHD+ full-screen display with an in-display fingerprint sensor, and a 4,000mAh battery (with 20W charging). Meanwhile, the Helio P90 is comparable to the Snapdragon 710, so it should deliver relatively smooth everyday performance and gaming.

The device also features a 16MP pop-up selfie camera, and a quad-camera setup consisting of a 48MP primary camera, 2MP depth sensor, 2MP monochrome shooter, and an 8MP ultra-wide sensor. This isn’t a bad deal for roughly $430 in India, although the Redmi K20 series and Realme’s devices are certainly major rivals.

5. Realme C2

The Realme C2 isn’t the most powerful device around, but it makes the list of best MediaTek phones thanks to its ~$87 price tag in India. The phone is powered by a MediaTek Helio P22 processor and also serves up 2GB or 3GB of RAM and 16GB or 32GB of expandable storage.

Realme’s phone packs a few features you might not expect at this price-point, such as a 4,000mAh battery and a dual rear camera setup (13MP+2MP). Then again, it lacks a fingerprint scanner and still offers microUSB connectivity, so you’re not quite getting all the expected features.

Perhaps the biggest downside to the device is that it isn’t on the list of Realme devices set to get Android 10 next year. We hope this is a mistake, because the phone only launched in April.

6. Realme 3

The Realme 5 series is already available, but that just means that the Realme 3 can now be had at a cheaper price point. Realme’s early 2019 device launched at Rs 8,999 (~$126), and you got plenty of bang for your buck even back then.

Realme’s device served up a 6.22-inch 720p screen, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 32GB of 64GB of storage, and a 4,230mAh battery. The Realme 3 also offered either a Helio P60 or Helio P70 chipset. These processors are comparable to the Snapdragon 660 in a few ways, so you can expect solid system performance. But you’ll likely have to turn down settings a tad in more demanding titles.

7. LG W30

The LG W series is an India-only range, but we really would like to see it come to other parts of the world. The LG W30 is the middle child here, and it packs an octa-core MediaTek Helio P22 chipset that’s broadly similar to the Snapdragon 439. Otherwise, you can expect 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, a 4,000mAh battery, and a 6.26-inch HD+ LCD screen.

LG’s phone also delivers a 16MP selfie camera in a waterdrop notch, as well as a triple rear camera setup. The latter consists of a 12MP main camera, 13MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor.

The LG W30 retails for ~$145, which isn’t quite as aggressively priced as devices from Xiaomi or Realme, but it still seems like a solid deal.
