iOS 7 bug allows bypass of Lockscreen

Image
iOS 7 just hit the public yesterday and it already has a major security flaw. Today an eagle-eyed user out there was able to discover a way to bypass the passcode-protected lockscreen and get  access to the device’s photos app, which open the gate for entry into the phone’s email and social network accounts. The way you can bypass the passcode is by accessing the alarm clock feature through Control Center, head to multitasking menu and hit the camera app from there. This issue runs through all versions of iOS 7, including 7.0.1 on the 5S tech site  Engadget  tested the hack on. This isn’t the first time Apple had a major bug comprise lockscreen security on its iProducts. We’re hoping the company readies a fix to blast out to us very shortly. Apple will more than likely serve up a software patch to close this gaping security hole, as it preps a 7.0.2 update. However, for the time being, we’d recommend folks who are worried about this to disable access to Control Center (in the settin

Sprint Planning Early Upgrade Program to Rival T-Mobile and Verizon

Image
T-Mobile really did shake up the entire U.S. wireless industry with its JUMP! early upgrade program. Verizon and AT&T followed pretty quickly with their own offerings that ended up being a total rip-off. According to a report from  CNET , Sprint is now preparing an early upgrade option of their own. Called One Up, Sprint has put together an early upgrade plan that is closer toT-Mobile’s JUMP! than Verizon’s Edge or AT&T’s NEXT options. We’ve confirmed through two sources that One Up is real. This may actually be a decent deal for Sprint customers that want a new phone every year. One Up is a payment plan that lets Sprint customers break up the cost of a new phone or tablet over 24 monthly installments, with the last installment being slightly higher or lower depending on the cost of the device. A new smartphone that sells for $649.99 at full retail price would end up being $27 a month, with the last payment being $28.99. Subscribers who sign up for One Up can then trade their d

Note: There's not a lot of real information available on the Apple A7 yet. Apple hasn't released much and they probably never will. It's not the

Does iOS 7 Raise the Bar for Android 4.3?

Image
With yesterday’s announcement from Apple of the new iPhone 5s sporting its latest iOS 7, it is inevitable that we compare it with the latest Android 4.3, announced on July 24 at “Breakfast with Pichai.” Currently the flagship OSs from both Apple and Google, we must look at how they are different, but also how they are similar to one another. Has Apple really shown us anything new in iOS 7 that we have not already experienced in Android 4.3, or even 4.2? There was a time when Android was scurrying to catch up to iOS, but this is no longer the case, as Apple’s critics clamored to add more Android-like features, like notifications and true multi-tasking. Let us look at how well Apple has answered those criticisms in iOS 7 and the new iPhone 5s. While Android 4.3 was more an iterative upgrade, iOS 7 is a total reworking of what was an aging operating system with a fresh looking icons and interface. Apple executive, Jony Ive, the designer of the iPhone and iPad, is a fan of translucent elem

iPhone 5S: What we know so far… Specs, Display and Performance

Image
“What we know so far” may be something of an exaggeration, since we really don’t know anything absolutely. Yet. That said, we’ve heard so many rumors and seen so many leaks that – with less than a week to go until launch – we decided it’d be a good thing to revisit everything we’ve read so far. Design Apple’s next flagship phone is almost certainly going to be the iPhone 5S. The company’s 7th new smartphone. On the design front, the name says it all. Going on previous ‘S’ versions of iPhones, it’s pretty clear that we shouldn’t expect anything other than a clone of the iPhone 5. Except with a few changes under the hood. On that note, we can expect the same combination of glass and aluminum, with the two-tone back. But it’s on the color options front that we find ourselves looking for change in 2013. Last year, the iPhone 5 debuted in two options: Black/Slate and White/Silver. This year there’s one almost certain addition and another highly doubtful one. The champagne gold and white lea

iPhone Apps of the week: Indie Pixel, Editorial, StuntCopter and much more!

It's a holiday weekend in the U.S. and Canada, and that means it's time for iMore's editorial Oompa-Loompas to share with you a selection of our most used apps. Webcam Settings -  Richard Devine There are some great webcams out there in the world to use with your Mac, such as the Logitech C920, but the support software is less than great. By less than great I mean non-existent in many cases. Being able to plug in a webcam and have it just work is fine, but what if you want or need to adjust the sharpness, or the white balance, or many other settings? That's where Webcam Settings comes into play. It's nothing fancy, it's basically a settings panel that lets you adjust various different settings of your webcam on the fly. There's more simple stuff such as contrast, brightness and sharpness, as well as more advanced tools such as backlight compensation and anti-flicker. It would be nice to get such software from the manufacturers like Logitech, but in the absen

Apple seek patents for smart brightness and automated FaceTime camera

Image
Apple  has applied for two patents that would help its products adjust itself to the specifications of a set user. This special technology will happen by way of a selective screen brightness control and auto camera switching during FaceTime video calls. Pursuing this further, the way the first patent works is it allows users to selectively adjust brightness and contrast of different user interface elements independently of one another. Without going crazy on explaining settings no one has tangible info on (because it doesn’t exist within an Apple product yet), it’s important to mention that the most important thing about it will be the battery settings it will garner. In the same way Android already offers this ability to control darker and brighter elements within the software. The second patent is more automated as it will let  Apple  devices switch automatically between front and rear-facing cameras at will thanks to learning how the device owner uses either lens. In order to exe

Apple's September 10 iPhone Media Event Said to Also Include New iPads

Image
Buried in an  article about Apple's upcoming Tokyo retail store ,  Bloomberg  briefly mentions that Apple's September 10 media event will see the introduction of not only new iPhone models, but also new iPads. The Cupertino, California-based company plans to introduce new versions of its phone and tablet at a Sept. 10 event, a person familiar with the matter has said, and the company promised “several more game changers” in the product pipeline as it tries to fend off Samsung Electronics Co. and Chinese makers selling cheaper handsets.   The September 10 date for Apple's iPhone media event was  reported by  AllThingsD  earlier this month and  all but confirmed  over the following few days by a number of other sources, but the event had been thought to be focused solely on the iPhone and iOS 7.  Given the casual nature with which  Bloomberg  mentions that new iPads are expected at the event, it is possible that it is an error, as rumors have suggested that the new iPads
