Verizon says two-year contracts aren’t going anywhere for existing customers

Image
Shutterstock Following in the footsteps of T-Mobile , Verizon recently announced that it was putting the kibosh on two-year contracts altogether. When Big Red first made the announcement, though, there were a number of notable details missing, namely what would happen to existing two-year contract customers when their plans were up. Now Verizon is offering up some clarification that discusses what new and existing customers will and won’t be able to accomplish with the carrier’s new “simplified” plans. To answer one of the most prominent questions about these new plans, Verizon says that existing customers on a two-year contract  will be able to upgrade to another two-year contract if they wish. This means existing contract customers can still get the latest and greatest smartphones at a subsidized price instead of being forced to finance the smartphone or pay full price. The carrier is letting current customers stay on these two-year long contracts as long as they wish, though o

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Smart Protect will help keep your next phone malware-free

Image
If you own a smartphone or computer, device security should always be on your mind. With thousands of unknown (“zero-day”) malware apps being generated each day, some of the traditional signature-based antivirus solutions aren’t always able to detect them all. So to better help protect users from mobile malware, Qualcomm today announced a new technology called Snapdragon Smart Protect. Smart Protect will be present on newer Qualcomm chipsets, such as the upcoming Snapdragon 820 , and will be used to help detect different types of mobile malware. Qualcomm has created new APIs that can be used by OEMs and antivirus app vendors to help complement their security technology with “real-time machine learning-based behavioral analysis”. Qualcomm explains: Snapdragon Smart Protect is engineered to look at the actual behavior of device applications in real time and almost instantly detect and classify any application behavior that is considered suspicious or anomalous. Samsung’s market cap falls to thirteenth place among global IT companies

Image
Samsung is currently experiencing a rather bi-polar market situation as of late. Despite releasing amazing hardware that has received rave reviews , the Korean OEM is also faced with the lingering, nagging (and perhaps now sagging) financial turmoil that sought to define most of 2014 . According to a new report published by The Korea Herald, the company is now out of the top 10 when it comes to having the largest market capitalization in the IT industry. Specifically, it’s now sitting solid at spot thirteen due in part to sluggish sales of the Galaxy S6, and an unfavorable business outlook. The  Herald mentions that Samsung “had remained in the top 10 IT companies since 2005, but it was left out of the league this year as investors found its shares less attractive amid the toughening competition with Apple’s iPhone and cheaper Chinese handsets.” Back in 2012, it was standing strong at spot number six with a market cap in excess of $200  billion , however it dropped to seventh plac

Motorola Bounce has a 5.43-inch QHD display and a Snapdragon 810, but what is it?

Image
Despite announcing its latest flagship, the Moto X Style (aka Moto X Pure) earlier this month, it seems Motorola isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Not only do rumors point to two new Verizon Droids in the near future, a new tweet from @upleaks has now outed the Motorola Bounce as well. According to the well-known leaker, the Moto Bounce has a 5.43-inch QHD display and is powered by a Snapdragon 810 with 3GB RAM. Other specs include 32 or 64GB storage, a 21MP camera (likely the one from the Style), and a 3760 mAh battery. The phone will also reportedly offer a “shatterproof” design meaning it will have probably a MIL-STD rating. The rumor doesn’t mention it, but we wouldn’t be too shocked if it ends up with water/dust resistance as well, but at the very least it is probably splashproof. Moto X Style hands-on and fi... Motorola Droid Turbo Review! So what is the Bounce? While we really don’t know for sure at this stage, we wouldn’t be too shocked if the Motorola Bounce

5G, one wireless technology to rule them all?

Image
If you look down the specification sheet of any modern day smartphone you will see that it supports a growing number of wireless technologies, 2G GSM, 3G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The 2G, 3G and 4G technologies are about making phone calls and sending/receiving data via cell towers. Wi-Fi is primarily about data via a local access point, while Bluetooth is for very close proximity data transfer. The progress from 2G to 3G, and from 3G to 4G LTE has been primarily about improvements to the standards related to cellular technology. However the move from 4G to 5G could be quite different. The current plan is for the 5G standard to be ready by 2020. However, during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games we will see a showcase and demonstration of 5G technology. This means that 5G is coming and it is coming fast. But, there is more to 5G than just super fast cellular tech . There is an active and open discussion going on to see if 5G can in fact become the de facto for all wirele
