Which up-and-coming OEM has the best chance for global success?

Image
It would be an understatement to say that consumer tech is experiencing something of a renaissance right now, particularly when it comes to smartphones. Everything is becoming slimmer, sleeker and continuously more powerful. Meanwhile, we no longer have to break the bank to stay on the bleeding edge; smaller (and/or lesser known) tech manufacturers (many of which are located in Asia) are on the rise, bringing with them a selection of impressive devices that are every bit as powerful as those made by the industry’s darlings but at a fraction of the cost. We saw a number of great devices over the course of 2016. The Samsung S7 series remains one of the most popular and highly-recommended devices, while HTC released one of its best smartphones ever in the HTC 10, despite its lackluster sales. However, many of the year’s most successful devices came courtesy of OEMs that are less familiar to many of us in the west, from brands including Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, and ZTE. With Samsung and Ap

Super Mario Run reaches 78 million downloads, 5% of users buy full game

Image
Nintendo has revealed that Super Mario Run has been downloaded 78 million times since its December release on iOS. The news arrives via The Wall Street Journal , which also revealed that five percent of players had paid the $9.99 fee to unlock the full version of the game. The free-to-play title has also made more than $53 million in revenue for Nintendo so far, ahead of its release on Android in March. But are these numbers good or bad for Nintendo? To begin with, Nintendo Chief Executive Tatsumi Kimishima said that the company expected a conversion rate which was in double figures, meaning Run achieved — at most — half of what was anticipated in terms of players purchasing the full game. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it made half as much money as expected, however, because Run might have been adopted by more players than anticipated. Indeed, in its recent financial report , Nintendo said that Run had “elicited a fantastic response,” surpassing “40 million downloads in four

The world’s first gigabit mobile network is now live – Update

Image
Update, January 31:  A little later than promised, Australian operator Telstra flicked the switch on the world’s first commercial gigabyte LTE network. Now available in select areas in central Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, the network offers theoretical transfer speeds of up to 1Gbps, several times faster than existing 4G networks. Telstra worked with Ericsson to deploy this fast new network, which uses 4×4 MIMO and 4X carrier aggregation to achieve blistering transfer rates. Speed tests demonstrated by Telstra showed 930 Mbps downloads and 127 Mbps uploads, enough to transfer a 3GB movie in three minutes. In order to take advantage of these capabilities, devices will need a compatible modem. X16, the first on the market, is supplied by Qualcomm. The first device to use this modem is a mobile router from Netgear, the Nighthawk M1 (via Android Central ). Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 835 flagship processor integrates the X16 LTE processor, so in the near future smartphones shoul

Rendering optimizations are making Chrome smoother and faster

Image
Chrome is the most popular browser in the world and to keep its many users happy, Google is constantly trying to improve it. In a recent blog post, the search giant said that it rolled out quite a few performance improvements to Chrome’s rendering pipeline over the last few months, making the browser even faster and more responsive. It now more intelligently skips redundant tasks, chooses optimal rendering algorithms, and better utilizes system hardware which means that not only do websites load faster, they also run smoother. Google’s Chrome team aims to optimize the browser’s rendering pipeline so every website is displayed at a buttery-smooth 60 frames per second. In order to accomplish this, the browser only has 16ms to render each frame. The less time it uses to render each frame the more time web developers have to run scripts and load content. A lot of the recent performance improvements made to the rendering pipeline were focused on reducing the per-frame workload which resu
