US DOJ might want ridiculous demand to approve T-Mobile-Sprint deal

Image
According to a new report from  Bloomberg , the U.S. Department of Justice could have a very specific — and outrageous — demand in mind before it will approve the T-Mobile-Sprint merger . The rumor stems from an unidentified “person familiar with the matter.” This anonymous source claims that the DOJ will demand that T-Mobile and Sprint create a fourth carrier in order to win government approval for their merger. In other words, to get the deal approved, T-Mobile and Sprint would combine (reducing the Big Four carriers to just the Big Three), and then create a new company — with its own network and everything. It’s going from Big Four to Big Three and then back to Big Four again, which doesn’t make much sense. Editor's Pick T-Mobile is quietly testing its 5G network in New York City Even though T-Mobile hasn't said when it'll launch its 5G network, Ookla technical evangelist Milan Milanović reported on Twitter earlier today that the carrier is currently testing

Pocophone F1 redux: Still the best value for money?

Image
2018 was a great year for smartphone enthusiasts, and one of the most celebrated and successful releases was the Pocophone F1 . It was the first device from a fresh new brand, a subsidiary of Xiaomi. The budget beast took the world by storm in August 2018 and became more popular than even some of Xiaomi’s major releases, for one simple reason: its spec-to-price ratio. As rumors of the Pocophone F2 begin to surface, we’re taking a look back at the Pocophone F1. Just how well does it hold up in 2019? Well, my job was to find out, and over the past two weeks I’ve been searching for the answer. It goes without saying that the Snapdragon 845 SoC with 6-8GB of RAM and 64-256GB of storage are all very respectable in 2019. The Pocophone F1 has no trouble competing with all but the best smartphones in 2019 , and it’s not just on paper that this thing excels. In everyday tasks, such as browsing social media, editing documents, watching videos and light gaming, the Pocophone F1 gets the j

Apple, Google, WhatsApp hit out at GCHQ proposal to spy on your encrypted chats

Image
Almost 50 companies and organizations have signed an open letter criticizing a snooping proposal. The proposal, by the British GCHQ intelligence agency, details a way for authorities to spy in chat apps. The Ghost Proposal would allow app developers to silently add law enforcement to chats and calls. A coalition of almost 50 companies and organizations have signed an open letter slamming a GCHQ proposal to let authorities spy on encrypted communication services. The so-called Ghost Proposal , first published late last year, calls for communication app developers to silently add law enforcement agencies to group chats or calls. In other words, your app or communication service wouldn’t pop up with a notification to alert you to these unwelcome guests. The Moto Z2 Force on Verizon will support the 5G Moto Mod

Image
Motorola announced today that the 5G Moto Mod will be compatible with the Moto Z2 Force sometime this summer. The 5G Moto Mod is currently only compatible with the Moto Z3 . The Mod will also be compatible with the new Moto Z4, which was just launched today. Read: Motorola Moto Z4 hands-on: Moto keeps the mod line alive Because the 5G Moto Mod only works with Verizon’s 5G network , so only the Moto Z2 Force on Verizon is compatible. Also, Verizon’s 5G network is nascent and is only available in two cities across the U.S. as of this writing. Verizon will expand its 5G network to more cities over time, but we don’t know how fast or slow that rollout is. We also don’t know how many Moto Z2 Force owners will jump at this, seeing how the phone is almost two years old. Editor's Pick What is 5G, and what can we expect from it? The world's first 5G networks switch on this year, promising faster data speeds and lower latency to consumers. In addition, 5G opens up avenue

Motorola Moto Z4 hands-on: Moto keeps the Mod line alive

Image
The Moto Z4 is the latest iteration of Motorola’s line of Mod-compatible phones. The Z4 picks up where the Moto Z3 left off last year. It slots into the “affordable premium” category by targeting value over raw performance. Motorola upped the screen size, opted for a huge camera sensor, and, yes, made sure to dangle that 5G carrot in your face. More important than the Moto Z4’s specs , however, is the price. Motorola updated the phone across the board and yet managed to keep the cost low enough for just about anyone — all while maintaining backward compatibility with the existing ecosystem of Moto Mods . Here are our Motorola Moto Z4 hands-on impressions. New face, same body Motorola painted itself into a bit of a design corner with its Z phones and the associated Moto Mods. Each new device in the series must carry forward the basic footprint of the original Moto Z, as well as the rear-mounted contact plate and circular camera module in order to fit the Mods. This means the Z4 i
