Huawei leaves Apple behind as it becomes second-largest OEM in 2019

Image
According to a new report by Counterpoint Research , Apple sold more smartphones in Q4 2019 than any other manufacturer. But Apple’s success couldn’t stop Huawei from passing it to become the second-largest OEM in 2019. Samsung remains top dog overall, but Huawei keeps inching closer every year. Huawei’s overall 2019 performance was solid, despite the ongoing trade band . The company’s market share grew from 14% to 16%, while Apple’s declined from 14% to 13%. Despite its decreased market share, Apple iPhone revenues were up YoY for the first time since September 2018. Counterpoint Huawei’s success is mostly attributed to its performance in its homeland. For the time being, the current political tension between Huawei and the US government hasn’t hindered global sales too much. But in the grand scheme of things, the trade ban is still relatively new, and its effects wi

Unfortunately, this strategy doesn’t appear to be working too well, as LG mobile just reported massive losses on its 2019 revenue report . According to the report, LG mobile lost 1.01 trillion Korean won (~$858.34 million) in 2019 based on 5.97 trillion Korean won (~$5.07 billion) in revenue. Ouch. LG is quick to blame a few things for the $858 million loss. It says “sluggish sales of mass-tier smartphones in overseas markets” are partially to blame, while also saying “increased marketing expenses to support flagship devices” exacerbated the situation further. What is the LG mobile division’s plan to stop the bleeding? The only commitment it makes in the report is “the introduction of new mid to premium 5G smartphones and continued cost-efficiency efforts.” What does that mean? To us, it says, “business as usual, but outsourcing more production.” Related:  LG in 2020: Time for a tu
