Android 11 groups your messages under a new Conversations notification section

Image
If you’re like us here at  Android Authority , you probably have multiple apps for communicating with people . Slack, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp , and regular ol’ text message alerts fill up our notification shade. With Android 11 , though, things are about to get more organized. In the first Developer Preview of Android 11 , a new “Conversations” section is introduced to the notification shade. Here, your various messaging app alerts are all grouped together in one place giving them priority over other notifications lower down the list. This new Conversations section creates three tiers of notifications in your shade: Conversations at the top, various other notifications in the middle, and silent notifications at the bottom. Related:  How to install the Android 11 Developer Preview Not only does this make your shade more organized, but it also brings new features that specifically apply to message apps. Long-pressing a notification brings up a secondary menu for that service. H

Android 11 lets you mute notifications while recording video

Notifications are useful, letting us know what’s going on in our digital world and informing us when someone is trying to reach us. But sometimes all they do is get in the way. I’ll often be watching a YouTube video or shooting video when I’m disrupted by one of my over-active Telegram chats, and the vibration always screws up my shot. I could turn on do-not-disturb mode, but doing that over and over every time I want to shoot a clip can get tedious. Thankfully Android 11 seems to have a solution for that. Android 11 release date: When can you expect it to launch?

Image
Google dropped the first Android 11 developer preview today (Wednesday, February 19), and there’s surprisingly a lot to dig into considering this is a very early build of the OS. If you don’t want to install the Android 11 preview on your phone just yet, we wouldn’t blame you. This is a very early build, so you’ll likely run into bugs and performance issues. So, you’re probably wondering when the official, consumer-ready Android 11 release date is happening. Google has outlined the three developer previews and three Android 11 beta builds that it expects to release over the coming months. Check out the details below: Developer preview 1: Early baseline build focused on developer feedback, with new features, APIs, and behavior changes. Developer preview 2: Incremental update with additional features, APIs, and behavior changes. Developer preview 3: Incremental update for stability and performance. Beta 1: Initial beta-quality release, over-the-air update to early adopte

Android 11 preview brings back screen recording: Here’s how to use it

Image
The newly released Android 11 Developer Preview has a number of new features . There’s also one that was included in the early versions of Android 10 . Yes, screen recording is back, and it appears that it’s actually functional (for the most part) in Android 11. While Google included this feature in the beta versions of Android 10 (back when it was called Android Q ), it didn’t work very well at all. Google decided to disable this feature when the final version of Android 10 dropped. It appears that the Android dev team has decided to try again with Android 11’s launch. How to enable Android 11 screen recording There’s a new Screen Record icon when you bring down the Quick Settings selections on top of the display. Tap on this new icon. You should see a notification pop up with the question “Start recording or casting with System UI?” There’s also a note below it stating System UI will be able to access all the info on the screen, including things like passwords and

The most notable new Android 11 features in the first Developer Preview

Image
The very first Android 11 Developer Preview landed earlier today. This is our first look at the next version of Android, which won’t land in a stable form until the third quarter of the year (likely in August or September). The Developer Preview landing this early is pretty notable as most DPs usually land in March. The reasoning behind this move likely has to do with just how developer-focused Android 11 is at the moment. Most of the changes within the system are not user-facing but could have a dramatic impact on existing and upcoming Android apps. As such, installing Android 11 on your own phone right now might not be too worth it. There will be a lot of bugs and most of the new features you won’t even see. However, we’ve compiled a running list of the most notable features in this first preview. Check them out below: New technologies: Android 11 is going to be much better when it comes to working with new technologies, including 5G, foldable displays, and low-latency video

Microsoft made two great Your Phone features Samsung exclusives for some reason

Image
Microsoft’s unfortunately named Your Phone app is incredibly useful for people who use both Android and Windows . The app allows for seamless integration between your phone and your PC. You can see notifications, respond to texts, and more without needing to touch your phone. However, two pretty neat new features available for the Your Phone app are Samsung exclusives (both via Android Police ) . Not only that but only one of the exclusive Samsung phones is something consumers can actually get at the moment. Nevertheless, here are the two new Your Phone features. Cross-device copy and paste Using your Samsung phone, you can now copy text and then use your Windows computer to paste the text (or vice versa). This seems like something people would do quite often. However, only four devices can use this Your Phone feature: the Samsung Galaxy S20 , Galaxy S20 Plus , Galaxy S20 Ultra , and Galaxy Z Flip . Of those four, only the Galaxy Z Flip is actually something consumers have in th
