Google to Add Local News into Google Now?

Google Now has successfully taken over our phones. Since Google Now was baked into Android 4.1 last year, I’ve found less and less reasons to install other apps like a weather app, or an app that shows me the scores of my favorite teams.

Now there’s a report out that Google is testing a local news “card” for Google Now. Which as you all know, Google Now is on iOS and Android. Google Now sounds like a great product to add a local news “card” into because it always knows where you are. So if you travel to another city, it can show you whats going on around you.

Currently, the beta test is not being disclosed but it being carried out solely within Google. It’s existence was revealed to Quartz last week when they interviewed Johanna Wright who is the Vice President of Search and Assist at Google.

“One thing we’re testing right now is a very local hyper-local news card,” according to Wright. “Which is really useful – it tells me things about my neighborhood. For example, I found out Miss Mexico came to my son’s school, I saw that Chipotle was giving out burritos, and someone was stabbed in the park near my house. It’s very, very targeted to you and your interests.”

Wright also said that the new local news product is only live in an “experimental version.” As most of you know, Google does extensive testing with new products before they release them into primetime. So far, it’s not clear whether Google will roll out a local news card for Google Now to the wider public, but if preliminary testing continues going well, it seems very likely. Perhaps we could see some huge changes for Google Now in Key Lime Pie this fall?

I’m very interested in this new local news card for Google Now and can’t wait to see it in primetime. How many of you would love to see this new local news card in your Google Now?
