Motorola Droid MAXX vs Motorola Droid Ultra

Here we the clash of the Droids – The Droid Maxx and Droid Ultra. The newest devices from Motorola made exclusively for the Verizon Bionic lineup. While these models were released back in August, we thought it would an interesting comparison between the two and since they are very similar, except for the battery, it may be tough to pick a winner from this Motorola duo.
Since they are both similar in specifications, let’s talk about both the Droid MAXX and Ultra together and then we will define what is different about each one. Both devices use last year’s processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro Dual-Core processor clocked at 1.7GHz. They are both packing 2GB of RAM, certainly up to par with other 2013 flagship phones. Neither the Droid MAXX nor Droid Ultra have room for expansion of memory as they lack a microSD card slot. The displays are only 1270×72  in a world of 1920×1080, and both are using the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean – I can only imagine with Verizon how long it will take them to get the newest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, or perhaps they will simply jump both devices to the newest Android 4.4 KitKat.

The Motorola Droid MAXX is a fine device – runs surprisingly smooth and fast for the hardware it is packing – Motorola really seems to squeeze the most from its phones specs, but for $299, I expect a little more higher-end hardware than just a huge battery, and huge it is at 3500mAh for that price.  When I look at the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specifications for the same price and a 3200mAh battery, the Droid MAXX just seems a little over inflated for its contents. The kevlar backing is a nice addition, rather than just plastic.

The Motorola Droid Ultra impressed our reviewer, although he disliked the shiny plastic casing, but found the red backing better looking than most.  Like the Droid MAXX, Motorola has really optimized the hardware and software to get the most out of their design, and the new Moto Blur is about as unobtrusive as you can get over the Android OS.  The Droid Ultra is thinner, 7.2mm vs. 8.5mm, and lighter at 140g vs. 167g – figures attributable to the larger battery (2130mAh vs.3500mAh).

…And The Winner is…

Actually, this comparison could be a tie, depending on what you want from your phone.  If you are looking for a slick, thin, and light phone; then you would be very happy with the Droid Ultra.  But for most, we will grab the larger battery and the kevlar backing of the Droid MAXX, so I am calling it the winner…but there are really no losers in this group depending on your tastes.
