Forget Netflix! Watch these free movies on YouTube instead
Netflix is not the cheapest video streaming service out there, costing as much as $16 per month. To save money, you could ditch your Netflix subscription and watch free movies on YouTube instead. There are quite a few of them available, although most of them are a bit older.
We’ve compiled a list of the 10 best free movies on YouTube from different genres including comedy, action, and horror. But keep in mind that they are not available in every country. Just like Netflix, YouTube has location restrictions set up, likely due to licensing rights. So if you can’t watch any of the movies on this list, you’ll need to connect to the internet via a VPN server located in the U.S.

1. A Fish Called Wanda
Released in 1988, A Fish Called Wanda stars Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis, and the brilliant John Cleese, who also wrote the movie. It’s about a group of people who come together to steal a bunch of diamonds worth millions of pounds and then try to cross each other for the loot. Unfortunately, things don’t quite go according to plan. The movie is primarily a comedy, although there’s a bit of action in it as well. It’s different from the films produced today, which is what makes it so special.
2. Death at a Funeral
This British comedy is simply phenomenal — it’s extremely funny as well as unique. A character named Simon is organizing the funeral of his dad, and as soon as friends and family arrive to pay their respects, things start to go wrong. Simon’s cousin wants to give valium to her fiancee to calm his nerves, but accidentally gives him a hallucinogenic designer drug that makes him do all sorts of crazy — and funny — things. Simon’s snobby brother Robert is also causing problems at the funeral and is declining to help pay for it. Then there’s the American man no one seems to know (played by Peter Dinklage), who has a secret about the deceased and is blackmailing the family for 15,000 pounds. Once that happens, things go from bad to worse.
3. The Blair Witch Project
If you’re into scary movies, The Blair Witch Project may be right up your alley. I remember watching it at my local theater when I was a kid and was scared out of my mind while walking back home at night. The story revolves around three student filmmakers who head into the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, to make a documentary about the Blair Witch, a local legend that has apparently killed a lot of people over the years. The three students go missing, and their equipment and footage are found a year later. The movie is based on the recovered footage that shows the horror the three students went through in the forest.
4. Shaolin
If you want to get your blood pumping, this is the free YouTube movie to watch. Shaolin is a Hong Kong-Chinese martial arts film that’s set during the early years of the Chinese republic when warlords were fighting with each other to gain more power. The story revolves around a young army leader Hou Jie who, along with his sworn brother Huo Lung. There’s a lot more to the story of course, but we’ll let you watch it for yourself!
5. Last Chance Harvey
Last Chance Harvey is a romantic comedy starring Dustin Hoffman as Harvey and Emma Thompson as Kate. Harvey is from New York and travels to London for his daughter’s wedding. Unfortunately for him, things start off pretty bad. He first learns that his daughter wants her stepdad to walk her down the aisle. He then wants to fly back to New York to take care of some work-related matters but misses his flight and gets fired. But then things take a turn for the better, as he starts talking to Kate at the airport bar. What happens next? Watch to find out.
6. Dirty Work
Dirty Work is a comedy film released in 1998 and directed by Bob Saget, who is best known for his role of Danny Tanner on the hit TV show Full House. It revolves around a character named Mitch Weaver, who is kind of a loser. He can’t hold a job and sucks at relationships. But he is great at one thing — revenge. Together with his buddy Sam, he opens up “Dirty Work”, a revenge-for-hire business. Dirty Work will definitely make you laugh, which is why it deserves a spot on our list of the best free movies on YouTube.
7. Of Mice and Men
This movie is based on John Steinbeck’s novella of the same name, which was released in 1936. It revolves around characters names George Milton and Lennie Small — played by Gary Sinise and John Malkovich — who travel the country together during the Great Depression looking for work on a farm and dream of owning their own land one day. George is a small and smart man, while Lennie is the exact opposite — he’s big and has a mental disability. The two create a strong bong, with George always looking out for his friends, helping him in any way he can.
8. Den of Thieves
This film was released in 2018, making it the newest one on our list of the best free movies on YouTube. It’s an action thriller starring a few big names including Gerard Butler and 50 Cent. The story revolves around an elite group of County Sheriff Deputies that want to stop a group of thieves planning to rob the Federal Reserve in LA. 9. Better Off Dead
This movie is old but brilliant. It was released in 1985 and starts a young John Cusack. It’s a romantic comedy about Lane, a high-school kid who wants to kill himself because his girlfriend left him for a guy named Roy. He tries to win her back in various ways but then ends up meeting another girl, a French foreign-exchange student named Monique. The girl helps build Lane’s confidence back and also helps him prepare for a ski race against Roy, which will determine which of the two will be the captain of the ski team. Better Off Dead is funny, romantic, and one of the best free movies you can watch on YouTube.
10. A Guy Thing
The plot of the movie goes something like this: Karen and Paul plan on getting married in a week, but things get complicated at Paul’s bachelor party. He wakes up the next morning in bed with one of the dancers from the night before, named Becky. They both quickly go their separate ways, hoping they will never see each other again. But, unfortunately, Becky turns out to be Karen’s cousin and is attending the wedding. On top of that, Becky’s ex-boyfriend Ray had her followed and has pictures of her with Paul. Becky and Paul them team up to try and break into Ray’s apartment and steal the photos. It’s a comedy that’s definitely worth watching.
