Nexus 5 given the teardown treatment, scores 8 out of 10 in repairability

Image
A rite of passage for any hot new device, iFixit’s teardowns give us insight into the hardware that makes the mobile magic happen: all the nitty-gritty components that we often talk about, but we rarely get to see. The newest device to visit iFixit’s teardown bench is the Nexus 5, the already popular pure Android smartphone that Google launched last week. So, when it comes to repairability, how good is the new LG-made Nexus? The device scored a very respectable 8 out of 10; the Nexus 5 is outranked only by two older devices from Motorola, the Droid Bionic and the Atrix 4G. iFixit found that the Nexus 5 is highly repairable thanks to its modular design, which makes it easy to replace just the faulty components, and repair-friendly assembly methods, including plastic clips, standard Phillips screws, and just a smidge of adhesive. Unfortunately, one of the most sensitive components of the phone is hard and expensive to replace: the display is glued to the cover glass, meaning that you wil

The Top 10 Tips For Purchasing a Google Nexus 5

Image
Although it has not been announced,  we  are very close to the next iteration of our favorite Google Sanctioned phone, the Nexus 5, it is not too early to start preparing if you plan on buying the phone. As with all Nexus releases, there is normally a mad rush by Android fans to be one of the first to purchase the phone. We have covered some of this in the past. Below are a few tips to help any future customer place a successful order for the phone. 1) Understand How Play Store Purchases Work Purchasing a phone from the Google Play Store is almost identical to the process you would use to purchase a video, application or tablet. All “Device” purchases must be paid with a valid credit card rather than with Google Play gift cards. If you can, it would not be a bad idea to attempt to purchase an application from the Google Play web store so that you understand the process. This can be accessed by going to  http://play.google.com You should understand that orders are normally shipped in

Google Officially Unveils LG Nexus 5

Image
This is it folks, the real deal. After months of leaks, rumors and speculation, the Nexus 5 by LG has finally been officially unveiled by Google — 5-inch 1080p HD display, Snapdragon 800, Android 4.4 KitKat and all. Why Google decided against a big announcement event is beyond us, but to be frank, we could hardly care right now. For the nerd elite, those who crave Google’s vision of Android, those ahead of the game buying unlocked handsets on cheap just-as-good-as-the-big-guys prepaid plans, this is exactly the phone you’ve been waiting for. No matter how it’s announced. Coming in black or white, with either 16GB of storage for $349, or 32GB for $399, the Nexus 5 is a beast of a phone. Most of the leaks on the specs have been spot on. The Nexus 5 will come with: 4.95-inch 1080p HD display Snapdragon 800 processor Adreno 330 2GB of RAM 1.3MP front-facing camera 8MP OIS rear camera Dual-band WiFi LTE Bands 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41 Bluetooth 4.0 2300 mAh battery Android 4.4 The specs, whi

Nexus 5 Stock Hits UK Retailer Carphone Warehouse

Image
Not a lot of you might know this but, there’s this search giant called Google who just so happen to make Android – you know, the Operating System that’s running on most smartphones these days. Well, every year this company takes it upon themselves to release a device called the Nexus, to show off just what they can do with stock Android, without those pesky OEMs like Samsung and HTC messing with their UI and experience. Oh, who are we kidding, you guys know  all  about the Nexus 5 already and so do we. Today’s the 31st of October and it’s a pretty fitting day for the Nexus 5 to be announced on. All signs and teases are pointing to today for an official announcement of the Nexus 5. Our UK readers will like this latest leak that our friends over at  Pocket-Lint   have found, stock of the Nexus 5 has hit Carphone Warehouse stores. Which has been selling the Nexus devices since Samsung’s first attempt, the Nexus S. Last night we got an exclusive look at an animated GIF of the Nexus 5, we k

A Nexus 5 Has Been Un boxed Somewhere

Image
As if the constant leaks and teasing isn’t enough, they just keep on coming. The Nexus 5 has been teased and  leaked so many times by now, you may as well swing by your local Best Buy, just to check that Google hasn’t secretly released the device into the wild. Google’s Nexus devices are a pretty big deal for Google, after all they’re a chance for the search giant to show off to the world just how good Android can be, when it’s left alone. Last year’s Nexus 4 broke the rules when it went on sale unlocked for far less than comparable smartphones and this year, we’re hoping for more of the same. The Nexus 4 didn’t have LTE however, this year the Nexus 5 should right that wrong and, it’s even coming to Sprint. Somewhere out in the world though, there is a Nexus 5 in retail packaging and this Nexus 5 has been unboxed.  PhoneArena   have been passed a tip that leads to a sinister screenshot hosted on  Photobucket . With no further commentary or even a shot of Android 4.4, KitKat running on

Today’s Google+ Announcement Have Something to Do With the Nexus 5

Image
We’re all wondering just when, oh when, is Google finally going to officially announce the new Nexus 5 and let us all hurry to the Play Store and let us buy one. Well, last night we got that little bit closer when a leak from WIND Mobile in Canada gave us another look at the Nexus 5 and gave us a cute little tagline. While that doesn’t seem like much to go on, when talking about today’s Google+ event scheduled for later on, stay with me. The tagline reads: Google Nexus 5. The smart, new phone made to capture the moments that matter. Vic Gundotra, the Senior Vice President of Engineering in charge of Google+, had this to say on  Google+  earlier on: Rehearsing for our Google+ update in the morning. I hope you can all join us and watch the live video stream! #momentsthatmatter There in lies the link, the fact that the Nexus 5 is being billed as the phone to capture moments that matter and Vic teasing today’s event will be all about moments that matter. Of course, this could all be conj

Latest Nexus Pre-Orders Starting on November 3rd

Image
We know a lot about the Nexus 5 already, we know what specs it’s going to come with and we know LG’s making it among other facts – we’ve even seen it in white! – but, one thing we still don’t know is just when we’re going to be able to buy it. We’ve been teased by the KitKat guys a number of times already and we’ve been hearing the end of October for a long time. In fact, today’s date, the 28th, is a date that was hinted at by the KitKat team. Now though,  PhoneArena   have been passed some new info from a tipster that seems to reveal the date for Pre-Orders on the Play Store. In the above screenshot, you can just about make out that the Play Store is giving us a November 3rd date for when Pre-Orders start. We’ve been thinking for a long time that pre-orders would be starting before the actual sale of the device, given the troubles people had trying to purchase last year’s Nexus 4. There’s no price listed here though so, it looks like could still be up in the air but, we’ve already h

@Evleaks Leaks Out The Google LG Nexus 5 Press Shots

Image
Ready for another Nexus 5 press shot? Well  @evleaks  thinks that we haven’t seen enough already. First we saw the one from TELUS, then the one from the Play Store when Google “accidentally” posted the Nexus 5 in the store. Now we’ve got one from everyone’s favorite leaker, that’s Evleaks. This press shot looks just like all the other images we’ve seen in the past month or so. You can even see the new icons which we’ve seen in many KitKat leaks as well as the new app drawer, folder and even the transparent navbar and status bar (which I think look amazing). We already knew that the Nexus 5 announcement and release is right around the corner, but the fact that Evleaks has now leaked it means we are really close. He doesn’t generally leak things until the release or announcement is a couple of weeks away or less. Google’s been rumored to announce the Nexus 5, and KitKat on so many dates that it might be easier to count the days that it hasn’t been rumored to be announced on. We know it

Android 4.4 and Nexus 5 Show up in Web logs

Image
Here’s some interesting news, and a leak that normally happens close to an announcement. It appears that some web logs are seeing Android 4.4 builds on some Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 devices. The build is KRT10F, KRT10, and KRT13. So this looks to be a more updated version of KitKat than what we’ve seen in other leaks lately. What’s interesting is that it’s showing up on both Nexus 4 and Nexus 5′s. Which pretty much confirms that the new Nexus will be named the Nexus 5. Now how can we decode these build numbers? Well basically the first letter stands for the release. So in Jelly Bean we had J builds, and in Ice Cream Sandwich we had I builds. Now the second letter stands for the branch code that allows Google to identify which code branch the build was made from. R is normally the primary release branch. Now the third letter and two numbers are for the date. The letter is for the quarter and the numbers are for the day. So it looks like this one was built on October 10th an
